MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. — Imagine a trackball 100 times bigger than the one inside your computer mouse. Now imagine yourself inside it, moving it with your feet to enter a virtual village in Afghanistan.
This simulator, VirtuSphere, looks more like a carnival fun-house game, but it has battlefield applications that could revolutionize the way students learn at Air University’s Squadron Officer College, said Fil Arenas, assistant professor of organizational leadership, and Andrew Stricker, distributive learning architect at the college.
The Squadron Officer College has two of the $35,000 VirtuSphere simulators; only 20 exist.
